Frequently asked questions

Everything you might want to know before putting your radio on the air.

Getting started

What is Volticast?

Volticast is a managed streaming platform for internet radio stations. It hosts your radio's streaming server, plays your music 24/7 with an AutoDJ, lets your DJs go live from their own computer, and shows you who is listening. There is nothing to install and no server to maintain.

Who is Volticast for?

Anyone running an internet radio station: a hobbyist, a community or student radio, an association, a church, a local business or a small professional broadcaster. If you want your station on the air around the clock without looking after a server, Volticast is built for you.

Do I need technical skills?

No. Everything happens in your web browser: you upload your tracks, build playlists, set a schedule and share your radio's link. The only software you may install is a broadcasting app such as BUTT or Mixxx, and only if you want to host live shows.

How long does it take to get a radio on the air?

A few minutes. Choose a plan, create your station, upload a few tracks and add them to a playlist: your radio is streaming as soon as the playlist is on air.

Broadcasting

Does my radio keep playing when my computer is off?

Yes. The AutoDJ runs on our servers, day and night, following your playlists and your schedule. Your own computer only matters when you choose to broadcast live.

Can I broadcast live shows?

Yes. Connect any common broadcasting app (BUTT, Mixxx and similar) with the details shown on your radio's Live DJ page. Your live show replaces the AutoDJ the moment you connect, and the AutoDJ picks up again on its own when you disconnect.

Which audio formats and quality can I stream in?

Volticast streams in AAC and MP3, the two formats every player supports. The highest bitrate depends on your plan, up to 320 kbps on the top plan.

How do listeners tune in?

Every radio gets a listen link that works in any player, a public page with a built-in player, and a player you can embed on your own website. You can also have your station listed in public radio directories from its settings.

Can I use my own domain name?

Yes. You can point your own domain at your radio, so listeners tune in at an address that carries your brand.

How do I upload a large music library?

Drop files into the Media page of your browser, or upload a whole library at once over SFTP with any file transfer app. Files sent over SFTP are imported automatically.

Can I see who is listening?

Yes. The analytics show your audience over time, the countries your listeners tune in from and your most-played tracks.

Plans and billing

How much does Volticast cost?

Plans start at €3.99 a month. There are three plans, billed monthly or yearly, and a year costs the price of ten months. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial.

Is there a free plan?

No. Volticast is paid for by its subscribers, which is why it never inserts advertising into your stream or onto your public page. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial: a card is required to start it, and cancelling before it ends costs nothing.

Is the number of listeners limited?

No. Every plan carries unlimited listeners and unlimited listening hours. A station whose sustained traffic is far beyond what a webradio of its size needs is contacted first, and a limit is agreed with it rather than imposed.

Can I run several radios?

One subscription covers one radio station. If you run several stations, write to us and we will find the right arrangement.

What happens if I cancel?

Your station stops broadcasting, but nothing is deleted for 30 days: your files, playlists and settings are kept, and subscribing again puts the radio back on the air at the same address. After that period, the radio and its content are deleted.

Does Volticast pay music royalties for my station?

No. Like most streaming hosts, Volticast provides the broadcasting, not the music licences. If you play music you do not own, you need the licences required in your country.

Data and security

Where is my data hosted?

In the European Union: our servers are in Germany, your media files are stored in France, and our emails are sent from Ireland. Volticast is published by LN Technologies, in France.

How is my account protected?

Passwords are checked against a strict policy, and you can turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app. You can also review and sign out your active sessions at any time.

Which languages is Volticast available in?

The whole site, the dashboard and the documentation are available in English and French.

How do I get help?

Write to us from the support page or by email. Most requests are answered within a few hours, and a public status page shows the health of the service at any time.
